Language and Education
Excel in the fields of language, culture or education.
Languages and Education at Ara covers a wide spectrum of learning.
In languages we offer English (plus the teaching of English), Te Reo Maori and Samoan.
In the area of education, we offer early childhood education, outdoor education, teacher education, and adult literacy.
Additionally, we offer confidence building courses for women at our Next Step Centre in Christchurch, and foundation studies courses for those looking for a stepping stone to further study or a new career.
All the above subjects are available at our City campus in Christchurch, while English and early childhood education are available at our Timaru campus. Te Reo courses are available at all Ara campus locations.
NB: If you’re still at high school, a Dual Enrolment programme at Ara can equip you with skills while you continue your education at school. Find out more here.
Adult education: Educators working in an adult learning environment can extend their ability to understand peoples' individual learning styles and boost their teaching skills. Gain a qualification in tertiary learning and teaching or develop a career in literacy and numeracy education and further your passion for working with and supporting others to achieve their goals.
Early childhood education: our programmes in early childhood education are for those who wish to develop a career caring for, educating and nurturing young children/tamariki. Our qualifications have a strong bicultural approach, and include extensive real-world experience in a range of early learning environments.
English language teaching: For those learning to teach English in New Zealand or overseas, our tutors have a wide industry experience and access to the latest research and methods. At Ara Institute of Canterbury, we tailor our English language teaching programmes to suit individual situations and learning styles, incorporating practical learning options.
Languages: We offer a range of programmes in Te Reo Māori and Samoan, including courses suitable for beginners. Our language tutors are native speakers and our multicultural campus provides further opportunities to talk with native speakers.
Learning English: For those intending to live, work or study in New Zealand, or simply wishing to learn or improve their English skills, we offer short courses, certificate and diploma level courses in English, designed to quickly improve your grasp of the English language.
We have up to date language laboratories and operate a modern Language Self Assessment Centre (LSAC) where you can come to practise and improve your English. Our language resources are considerable and include:
- CD Roms and DVDs
- Audio labs
- Multimedia computer facilities
Our graduates succeed locally and globally, whether working with international hotels, restaurants or global businesses. An Ara Institute of Canterbury qualification gives employers a clear signal that you have the skills and practical experience to contribute to the workplace from day one.
Employers both here and overseas know that with an Ara Institute of Canterbury qualification highlighted on your CV you can successfully converse in social and business situations.
Workforce restrictions apply for those employed in sectors working with children. See the full workforce restrictions.
