07 August, 2025

Ara international student Viyana Cooray has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to the Canterbury community at the 2025 Waitaha Canterbury International Student Awards.

Ara Institute of Canterbury is celebrating the success of international student Viyana Cooray, who was today awarded the Cultural Ambassador Award – Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Sector at the 2025 Waitaha Canterbury International Student Awards.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Viyana recently completed her Graduate Diploma in Quantity Surveying at Ara. She was recognised for her dedication to cultural sharing, creative performances and her role in promoting Sri Lankan heritage while embracing Kiwi life. The awards ceremony was held at Ngā Hau E Whā National Marae on 7 August 2025.

“I’m deeply honoured to receive this award. Studying at Ara was a transformative experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my culture while learning from others. This recognition encourages me to keep building bridges between communities and celebrating diversity,” Viyana said.

Viyana’s journey to Ara began in July 2024, following her success as Miss Queen of the World Sri Lanka 2023, where she also won titles for Best in National Costume and Most Talented Queen. A graduate of Birmingham City University with a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management, she also holds a Higher National Diploma in Quantity Surveying and worked as a Quantity Surveyor in Sri Lanka.

“My host parents, Anna and Kyle Pol, have been my greatest strength and support. Since arriving in New Zealand, they’ve treated me like their own daughter. Their encouragement has helped me thrive and excel in both my performances and professional development,” Viyana added.

Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Viyana is a passionate advocate for cultural exchange. She actively participates in events and performances that celebrate Sri Lankan traditions, while also engaging in charity work and mentoring fellow students. She volunteered with a global charity organisation she connected with through Ara and her church, further demonstrating her commitment to community and service.

“We’re incredibly proud of Viyana and all she has achieved. She brought a thoughtful, collaborative approach to her studies and was always willing to support others. Her commitment to both her learning and the wider community is inspiring and this award is a well-deserved recognition of her leadership and contribution,” said Sundeep Daggubati, Ara Senior Academic Staff Member.

Carl Pavletich, Manager – Local and Global Marketing, added, “Viyana’s success is a wonderful reflection of the talent, resilience and generosity that international students bring to the Ara and Canterbury Waitaha community. We’re proud to support learners from around the world and it’s inspiring to see Viyana recognised for the impact she’s making both on and off campus.”

Viyana’s award underscores the significant role international students play in enriching campus life and the broader Canterbury community. With their global perspectives, generosity of spirit and commitment to connection, students like Viyana help shape a more inclusive and vibrant region.

The Waitaha Canterbury International Student Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of international students across three categories:

  • Community Engagement
  • Leader and Mentor
  • Cultural Ambassador

All nominees were also considered for the prestigious Mayor's International Student of the Year Award, which this year was awarded to Viet Kien Ngo from the University of Canterbury.

What’s next for Viyana? She plans to continue working in New Zealand as a Quantity Surveyor, with a focus on enhancing her skills and gaining further experience in the field.

Ara Institute of Canterbury is incredibly proud of Viyana, and celebrates the achievements of all our international students, who bring unique perspectives and strengths to our learning communities and make Ōtautahi Christchurch a welcoming and dynamic place to study and live.
